Windy Weather Wasn't a Worry for Wade Sahmel

March 26, 2006

Lewisville, Texas -- The wind would play a major factor for this Texas Putting tour event. With the wind gusting   between 15 and 30mph just keeping your ball on the tee mat was a chore. Lee Messinger and Wade Sahmel shared the lead at nine under 27 after the opening round with David Lynch and Greg Everly sitting one stroke back.

A nice 10 under 26 in the second round would give Sahmel a fairly comfortable three stroke lead heading to the final round but he could not afford any mistakes as there were six other players within six strokes of him.

A 15 on the tough front nine would normally have been enough to keep Sahmel in the lead considering the conditions, but three of players behind him would make up some ground. Gary Reed and Lynch would both fire six under 12’s and Messinger’s five under 13 would tighten things up considerably. Sahmel was now tied with Lynch with Reed and Messinger sitting one and two strokes back respectively with nine holes left. A very solid six under 12 on the back from Sahmel would settle the matter and give him a nice 28 under 80 and a three stroke win over Lynch and Messinger.

Additional match play sports went to Mike Baldoza and Reed in match play competition.

In the APA, a large field of 13 amateurs battled the winds through three rounds of medal play.  Experience won out as Danny Hoel of Oklahoma City, OK maintained his cool and went wire to wire for his first win of the 2006 season.

Hoel opened in the lead at 8 under par, tied with Trevor Lewin.  Mark O'Guinn was two strokes back at 30, with David Chisum, Ken Stanfill and Donald Halpain all tied another stroke back at 31.

Hoel continued his strong play into the second round, managing only one bogey in the round for 7 under par to take the 36 hole lead at 57.  Lewin shot 5 under par for the round and trailed Hoel two strokes back at 59.  Gary Plain fired the low round of the day at 11 under par in the second round and trailed Lewin by a stroke at 60, with Chisum still in the hunt at 61.

With winds continuing to pick up, Hoel faltered a little in the final round, posting only 4 under par but was able to hold on to the win at 89.  O'Guinn picked up the pace in the final round, posting 7 under par to come in second at 91.  Chisum, Lewin, Adam Sahmel and Jason VanBuskirk all followed at 92 to split the final expense reimbursement slot.

In match play, David Blalock defeated Trevor Lewin and Ken Stanfill defeated Adam Sahmel to take the Texas State Championship qualification spots.
